Method and practical guide
Data storage conversion for Byte, KB, MB, GB, and TB
Estimate file sizes, storage capacity, and transfer needs. This site uses the binary relationship 1 KB = 1,024 bytes.
How it is calculated
Bytes are the reference, and each KB, MB, GB, TB, or PB step uses a factor of 1,024. Some drive manufacturers instead use decimal steps of 1,000.
Reference values
- 1 KB = 1,024 bytes
- 1 MB = 1,024 KB
- 1 GB = 1,024 MB
- 1 TB = 1,024 GB
Worked examples
- 2,048 bytes = 2 KB
- 4,096 MB = 4 GB
- 1.5 TB = 1,536 GB
Common uses
Downloads, cloud servers, memory purchases, and backup estimates can differ depending on whether the source uses factors of 1,000 or 1,024.
Accuracy and scope
The interface uses familiar KB/MB/GB labels for binary steps. The strict IEC names are KiB/MiB/GiB, so check the convention when comparing advertised capacity.
